Dairy-Free Alternatives That Actually Taste Good: A Mom-Approved Guide
Share
If you’re trying to go dairy-free—whether for your own health or because your child has a sensitivity—you’ve probably already discovered one thing: not all dairy alternatives are created equal. The good news? There are delicious options out there that won’t leave you (always) missing the real thing. In this post, I’m sharing the best dairy-free alternatives for moms and families that I’ve personally tested (and loved). Some of them took me a few years to find, but well worth the wait. Here are some of my top picks...
🧈 1. Best Dairy-Free Butter: Miyoko’s Plant-Based Butter
If you're baking or cooking, Miyoko’s butter is one of the best dairy-free alternatives around. It’s rich, creamy, and behaves just like traditional butter in most recipes. Just a heads-up—it can burn easily on high heat, so keep an eye on that skillet! They recently came out with an oat-based one, I haven't tried that one yet, but if it is half as good as the original then it is worth a try.
🧀 2. Best Dairy-Free Cream Cheese: Violife Cream Cheese
Ok I have tried so many vegan cream cheeses only to literally spit them out in the garbage. Finally I found a winner! This is hands-down the first cream cheese alternative I’ve found that actually tastes like the real deal. It’s smooth, spreadable, and perfect on a bagel. Their chives flavor has my heart. When putting it on toast or a bagel, it does melt in pretty quickly, so you won't get that thick white layer, but believe me the flavor is there.
🧂 3. Best Vegan Parmesan Cheese: Follow Your Heart Parmesan
Missing Parmesan? Don’t. Follow Your Heart’s Vegan Parmesan has the same salty, savory flavor and sprinkles perfectly over pasta, salad, or veggies. All of my family uses it and they cannot tell the difference.
🍨 4. Best Dairy-Free Ice Cream: Nada Moo
Ahh alas, a delicious dairy-free ice cream. What I don't like about many non-dairy ice creams is that they are packed with additives or lack that creamy texture—but not Nada Moo. It’s made with clean ingredients, has great flavor, and is a favorite for the whole family. Full disclosure, it is coconut based, but I don't mind the hint of coconut flavor. They have a lot of different flavors too. My favorite is the vanilla, but the family votes for Mint Chocolate Chip every time.
✨ 5. Cheesy Flavor Without the Cheese: Nutritional Yeast
For that cheesy, umami flavor in a healthy way, nutritional yeast is a pantry must-have. Sprinkle it on popcorn, stir it into pasta, or use it to boost sauces. This has been a great way to flavor a dairy-free Alfredo or cheese sauce into having a "cheesy" taste.
🍕 6. Dairy-Free Pizza Tips: Follow Your Heart Shredded Mozzarella
Let’s be honest—pizza is hard to replicate without real cheese. But if you’re craving a slice, Follow Your Heart’s shredded mozzarella is the best dairy-free option I’ve found. Pro tip: cook your pizza at a high temp so the cheese melts properly. It won’t taste exactly like traditional pizza, but it gets close enough to satisfy the craving. Also don't load on too much. Too much dairy-free cheese can taste a bit gummy. Sprinkle it on light.
🧡 7. Best Dairy-Free Mac and Cheese
From-scratch version:
Use dairy-free milk, plant-based butter, nutritional yeast, flour, and spices to create a creamy mac and cheese your whole family will love.
Store-bought option:
Daiya’s mac and cheese with the liquid cheese packet (skip the powder kind!) is a quick, kid-friendly option that tastes decent and saves time.
Going Dairy-Free Doesn’t Mean Missing Out
Whether you’re going dairy-free for personal health, postpartum healing, or for your child’s dietary needs, you don’t have to give up your favorite foods. These alternatives make the transition a little easier—and actually enjoyable.
